Originally founded in 1978 to issue coal mine reclamation bonds, Century Surety entered the excess and surplus lines (E&S) insurance business in 1984. E&S remains Century's largest business focus. Century underwrites general liability, commercial property for small and mid-sized businesses which it markets through a select network of general agents and brokers.
Additionally, Century underwrites certain specialty lines such as garage, environmental, construction and marine.
On July 31, 2008, Century became a subsidiary of Meadowbrook Insurance Group, Inc.
