MEADOWBROOK INSURANCE GROUP, Inc. (NYSE:MIG) is a publicly traded company that employs approximately 1100 associates in 34 offices throughout the United States and Bermuda.  Meadowbrook operates insurance agencies, a risk management company that provides services to self-insured groups, funds and pools, and operates 4 domestic and 1 foreign insurance companies.  We are currently looking for a full time Claims Attorney/Litigation Specialist to join our Columbus Office.

Responsible for handling complex professional liability claims both in suit and pre-suit, complex legal and coverage issues, legal research and managing claim related projects as they occur.

Essential Functions  


Essential functions:

1.       Handle suits on third party litigated claim files, including collaborating with and managing outside counsel and complex litigated claim files as assigned.

2.       Analyze coverage issues on litigated claim files and claim files with potential for litigation.

3.       Assist with negotiations, mediations, arbitrations and settlement procedures as assigned.

4.       Attend and provide litigation advice in claim review meetings.

5.       Coordinate referral with VP of Claims on other litigated claim requests to outside counsel.

6.       Conduct legal research as necessary.

7.       Review company policy forms as needed.

8.       Research and write brief opinions on coverage issues.

9.       Recommend reserve and payment changes.

10.   Provide and report claims information to Senior Management on an as needed basis.

11.   Assist Forms Committee; propose changes/revisions/amendments to company policy forms, make appropriate policy language recommendations and draft policy language for new forms.

12.    Must adhere to company code of ethics.




1.       Juris Doctor Degree and/or Bachelor Degree from a 4 year college or university.

2.       Admissions to State Bar.

3.       A minimum of 5 years related experience.

4.       Ability to prioritize, organize and plan work for self and others.

5.       Excellent customer service skills.

6.       Excellent written and oral communication skills.

7.       Superior problem-solving ability.

8.       Thorough knowledge of claim procedures, polices, terminology, etc.

9.       Detailed knowledge of Company’s established claims processing procedures.

10.   Computer efficient with Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel and Outlook.

11.   Possess a valid driver’s license and State adjusting license(s) as applicable.

12.   Ensure assigned files are handled in good faith as defined by statute, case-law and Corporate standards.

13.   Ability to travel as required.
